The Rise Of Visual Social Media

Posted: September 3, 2012 in Uncategorized

Blog posts became Facebook updates and Tumblr posts, which shrunk to Tweets and finally to Instagram or Pinterest. Here’s how smart brands are navigating the new visual social-media era.

Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have ushered in visual marketing as the breakout trend for 2012. When it comes to their products, businesses are learning to show, not tell, and visual content sites are fueling our desire for beautiful photography and sensational design. Two years ago, marketers were spreading the maxim that “content is king,” but now, it seems, “a picture really is worth a thousand words.”

If you go over to the Google Search homepage and hover your cursor over the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, something pretty cool happens. The button starts spinning like a slot machine before stopping at a random completion of the phrase, “I’m feeling…” Then, you click the button to experience some related corner of the online Google empire.

Select “I’m Feeling Wonderful,” for example, and you’re whisked away to some part of Google’s World Wonders Project, which highlights fascinating cultural sites from around globe. “I’m Feeling Trendy” takes you to the Hot Searches page, which shows the topics and stories that are trending online. “I’m Feeling Stellar” brings up image search results for the Orion Nebula. And so on.

Fair warning, though — you might get hooked and it’s a major temptation for procrastination. But the Doodle-y pastime isn’t just addictive. It’s smart, too. Think about it: What better way to pimp the vast array of services, tools and pure randomness Google offers its online users? I wasn’t super familiar with the World Wonders Project, for example — but may well go back for some enlightening entertainment later.

Google, or course, is no stranger to subtle marketing ploys. It’s Easter Eggs and Doodles have long since captivated nerds and Internet denizens, including us here at Mashable. Check out some of our favorite Google Doodles below.

As someone who has been on many a job search, I can tell you that the way people in this country are hired is broken. And the parts that aren’t broken, are needlessly rude and disrespectful.

1. Hiring managers insist on receiving paper résumés in the mail.
Paper résumés?! Seriously?! Who the hell still uses these things? I’m sometimes still flabbergasted that people use paper, let alone apply for jobs with paper résumés. They want you to mail your paper résumé to their office, rather than email the same information in a PDF or Word version. If you don’t know how to use the technology, then hire someone who can show you how.

Want to get more creative with Pinterest? Now you can, thanks to Bazaart.

The startup has released a free iPad application that lets you collage your pins, as well as those of other users on the network. It’s easy to find, add, resize, rotate and otherwise assemble your collage. You can also add borders to images or select “crop” to remove white space.

The app isn’t perfect: If you have a board with more than 25 pins, you won’t be able to load them all. (Gili Golander, Bazaart’s fashion director, tells me this is a result of Pinterest’s RSS feed limitation, and there’s nothing they can do about it.) The crop button tends to completely erase light-colored images. An “undo” button would be a welcome addition as well. But it’s a nice start.

Beyond collaging, the Bazaart app is also a decent Pinterest client: You can explore other boards, repin items and pull up their source pages — meaning that all of the products pins are also shoppable within the app.

The app’s creators are apart of the DreamIt Ventures accelerator program for Israeli startups in New York. This is the second app they have built atop Pinterest. The first, Pinvolve, lets Facebook Page administrators quickly transfer their content to Pinterest.
